A little more than a year ago,I got (because I need it on my job) an iPod (like, the original iPod). It sucked. It is big,it is heavy, the battery does not last long enough for an international flight. For sports,it was absolutely unusable, because doing so would crash your hard disk in about six months time.I hardly used it. The next one (iPod photo) offered the opportunity to look at photos on a screen about the size of a cellphone. How pathetic is that? Then came the iPod mini. Still had a hard drive. The iPod shuffle was about the worst thing ever. Apple sold for 100$ a player that was inferior to about every product you could buy at Radio Shack for half the prize. Then –one more thing –came the iPod nano. And I am impressed. It is light, small, has a display that you can actually read in about all light conditions, and it has 4Gigs of Solid State Memory, which should be sufficient even if you run 2 Ironman back-to-back. You have to run them in about 7 hours each though, otherwise the battery will run out before you do. In my opinion, the sound that the ipod (and that goes for all of them) produces,is NOT the best you can get, there are other players that are superior,if slightly so. However,to keep me entertained while working out,I couldn’t care less. One thing that sucks is that Apple greatly downsized what is in the package. While my Original iPod featured both a Docking station and a Charger, both are missing on the ipod. The Docking station (30$) is just a convenience, but the charger (80$) is a must if you travel and don’t have your computer whith you, which, dear Steve Jobs, people that don’t live in the valley actually do from time to time. For that reason my rating on an otherwise great product:4 out of 5
This little toy is a speed/distance/cadence meter for your bike. I usually work with my Polar S720i/S625X setup (we get to that some other time),but since I want to be able to train indoors,I needed a speed sensor that fits on the rear tire. And Polar doesn’t do that,as far as I know. So I see this toy (ca. 40$) and the package says it features a wired setup (which means there is a cable from the cadence/speed sensors to the display) and a sensor for the rear wheel. It is nice and small and lightweight, and I thought to myself, what can go wrong. I bought it,went home and tried to install it. Now I do know what can go wrong:Dear folks at Cateye, you do make great items. This is not one of them. It does not fit my bike. It is simply impossible to set it up the way you describe in the manual, because the cable from the cadence sensor to the display is to short. And no,it is not my bike. I have an over-the-counter 59cm road-bike frame with a standard stem. HELLO? How much do 3 inch of 2wire cable cost? 0.01 cent? Or did your marketing department get into an exchange program with your engineers. My rating:0 of 5 03/01/2006 Update: I went to my bike shop to return my Cateye bike computer thing (see earlier post),and they told me that this was just a problem with my product, not a general design error. And they had the replacement to prove it. While it is still a total mystery to me how that could happen in modern manufacturing,I am actually quite happy with the model I have now. Set up is easy, and it pretty much does the job. Shows speed and cadence. All the other features, like total trip miles and stuff,I don’t really need. The display is rather small, making some parts hard to read. My revised rating:3 of 5 Borders.com Sent me a coupon for 20% off of any book that expired today. So I went to Borders to look for a book. Got an idea. Since I bough me a bike (which I didn’t use so far),it might be good to buy a book on bikes as well. You know, just the basics, maintenance, how to sit correctly and so on. Went to the sports book section. Found a book on bikes. Also found a book called “Becoming An Ironman”(ISBN 1-891369-31-8) which contains personal stories of Ironman first-timers. Bought the latter. Also bought “Triathlon Training”. Did not buy a book on bikes. At night I read both books about halfway trough. 23.00 Checked the Ironman Website. Almost everything for this year is sold out. Florianopolis in Brazil is not. May 28th. A little under 13 weeks. The last time I have ridden a bike for more than 30mins was 7 years ago. Swimming more or less the same. Marathon I am currently training on (LA,March 19th). Hmmmmm,I think I will sleep on it. 01.30 Can’t sleep. Read to more Ironman stories. Read up to the chapter of the DNFs (Did not finish). Talk to my girlfriend,She is skeptical, but fine with the idea. Check the training book again. There is a 12 week training schedule for an Ironman included. Reads:“You should have some triathlon experience. You need to comfortably swim 1km,cycle 60km and run 12km,and you should be training regularly” OK,forget the first sentence. That’s much to vague for me. What does comfortably mean? Given all the time in the world I can definitely do the requirements. Or does that mean all in one day? Oh,what the heck,I think I’ll just try. 02:10 Signed up for IM Brazil. Bought me a road-bike at Performance Bikes in Santa Monica. Great Place, great bike, great price. I just figured,a bike might help me loose some weight and cycling is probably a nice way to see the area around here. Amazon just sent me my new Body Scale. I refuse to admit that it probably works correctly. Anyhow, lets face the facts:I am a) to heavy b) to fat c) my biological age is much higher than my real age See,and I just spend over a hundred buck to get my day ruined. Isn’t life great? Event Stats: Name Pacific Shoreline Halfmarathon Date 02/05/2006 Location Huntington Beach,CA,USA Event Halfmarathon Finish Time 02:09:22 Went out way to fast, didn’t get enough drink in and bonked. End of story. I better adapt to the climate in California. | |
